ATMC Awarded $1.4 Million in GREAT Grant Funds to Serve Rural Areas in Brunswick County
Raleigh, NC – Governor Roy Cooper announced that ATMC was one of 11 recipients to receive funding through the 2020 Special Supplementary Round of the Growing Rural Economies through Access to Technology (GREAT) Grant Program. ATMC was awarded $1.4 million that will be used to expand high speed internet service to more than 1,000 addresses in the communities of Sandy Creek and Northwest in rural Brunswick County. ATMC will provide an additional $867,692 dollars in matching funds to the project.
“ATMC is excited to receive these grants through this special round of funding through the NC GREAT Grant program,” said Keith Holden, ATMC CEO. “This is the first time we’ve been able to apply for an area of Brunswick County that isn’t served by ATMC.” Holden added, “By allowing Tier 3 counties in this round of applications, we were able to apply for these rural areas in Northwest and Sandy Creek.”
The Governor’s office along with the NC Department of Information Technology introduced the Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) program in 2019 as a way for internet service providers and cooperatives to seek and compete for funding to aid in lowering financial barriers that prevent high speed internet service expansion in Tier 1 counties. For this special supplementary round provided through the CARES Act funds, projects in Tier 1, Tier 2 and rural census tracts of Tier 3 counties were eligible.
“We appreciate every resident, business owner, community leader, and state and national representative that sent in letters of support on behalf of this grant project. We would also like to thank Senator Bill Rabon and Representative Frank Iler for their support of the NC GREAT Grant program.”
ATMC is awaiting details as to when these grant funds will be made available to begin work on the grant projects. To stay up to date on construction of these grant projects, please visit www.atmc.com or call 910-754-4311.
